Concepts in drawing

About the course

Course Title: Concepts in Drawing: Quick Marks, Deep Thoughts

Course Description:

In Concepts in Drawing: Quick Marks, Deep Thoughts, students will embark on a fast-paced journey through the expansive world of contemporary drawing. This course challenges traditional notions of drawing by pushing the boundaries of what a mark can be, encouraging students to explore both conventional and non-traditional tools to discover their unique, authentic studio practice.

Each week, students will receive open-ended prompts designed to provoke creativity and deepen conceptual thinking. These prompts build progressively, guiding students through ten distinct challenges that will sharpen their technical skills and expand their personal visual vocabulary. The prompts are crafted to inspire quick, yet thoughtful work, promoting a consistent and prolific practice.

Weekly lectures will research  the practices of contemporary artists, offering insights that will fuel students' creative processes and help them explore the limitless possibilities within drawing. These lectures, paired with regular critiques, will foster a dynamic environment where students learn to articulate their ideas, engage in constructive dialogue, and refine their work based on peer feedback.

By the end of the semester, students will have developed the ability to conceptualize, realize, and theorize their work with agility and confidence. They will leave the course with a solid foundation in both the practice and the language of contemporary drawing, ready to continue their artistic journey with a fresh perspective and a robust work ethic.
