Course Title:
"Pitch Perfect: Mastering the Art of the Artist Talk"
Course Description:
This course is designed to equip emerging artists and graduate students with the essential skills needed to create compelling artist talks and professional presentations. Throughout the semester, we will focus on developing the content and delivery of an effective artist talk, which is a critical tool for sharing your work in professional settings, including job interviews, residency applications, and public talks.
Students will work collaboratively to conceptualize and produce a ten-slide deck that showcases the strengths of their artistic practice. We will explore best practices for visual storytelling, slide design, and public speaking, ensuring that each student can confidently articulate their artistic vision in both digital and public spaces.
This course will culminate in the recording of a ten-minute artist talk, where each student will present their work to the class and receive constructive feedback. The process will emphasize the importance of critique, self-reflection, and professional presentation, helping students identify and refine both the strengths and areas for improvement in how they present their work.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this course, students will:
1. Create a Professional Slide Deck: Develop a cohesive and visually engaging ten-slide presentation that effectively communicates their artistic practice, tailored for professional contexts such as job applications, residency proposals, and artist talks.
2. Deliver an Artist Talk:Present a clear, concise, and compelling ten-minute artist talk, recorded for review, that articulates their artistic vision, process, and work to a public audience.
3. Engage in Constructive Critique: Learn to give and receive detailed, constructive feedback on both the content and delivery of artist talks and presentations, fostering a supportive environment for growth.
4. Refine Public Speaking Skills: Gain confidence and proficiency in public speaking, including techniques for managing nerves, engaging an audience, and clearly communicating complex ideas.
5. Evaluate and Reflect on Presentation Strengths and Weaknesses: Develop a critical eye for assessing their own presentations, identifying areas of strength and opportunities for improvement, and applying these insights to future professional practice.
This course will provide students with the foundational tools to succeed in the professional art world, where the ability to effectively present and discuss one's work is as crucial as the work itself.
